In the past we run several times postings with the subject: What do you
collect? This way we could learn more about the philatelic interests of the
participants in RCSD and know better one another.

I will start by (re)introducing myself. As noted in my signature, I'm
interested in the topics "Art on Stamps" and "Communism on Postal Stamps."
Other interests are Romanian stamps and philatelic webmastering. Humor
related to stamps is also a subject that interests me.

How about you? TIA.

I collect US just because they are simple to obtain. Have nearly a mint
collection all the way back to the 20's. Beyond that I tend to collect
things about space including stamps, event covers(launches etc), some of
my favorite covers now are from Ariane V launches by Arianespace from
French. A side note, I got my wife started collecting stamps with
penguins on them, keeps her interested when we go to stamp shows. She
has a pretty good small topical collection now.

I am a casual collector of US stamps, up through 1985 (my son does
1885-present). We're both in this purely for pleasure rather than
investment value, though finding something valuable is certainly nice.

I have collected stamps from France since 1954 (I was 10).

I stopped buying the newly issued stamps on 1st jan 2002,
a symbolic date (the last stamps with a face value in French Francs
disappeared at that date). The reason was not of course the
introduction of Euro, but the silly policy of the issuing authority
trying to sell more and more stamps, booklets, souvenir sheets,
personalized stamps and all kinds of cinderellas.

Amongst this ugly stuff about only 10% of nice looking engraved
stamps, the remaining being mostly computer designed stamps
based on photographies.

As my "to have" list of stamps from France is now consisting of
about 15 stamps plus some "end of catalog", I only buy these
remaining stamps. Due to their price, it takes time and I will
never have all of them ...

I also began sorting out a "shoe box" of about 8,000 stamps from
Australia that I bought 10 years ago. It took me nearly 2 months to
nearly complete the job.

I also collect "oddities" or amusing covers.

If you are interested in minutae, get a copy of the Brusden-White
cataloge for Australia. Of the KGV 1d [and many others], which sell
for pennies, there's quite a range of sub-varities and some are very
rare! Should you find those, you might get enough to finance your
remaining 15!

Having given up on the US when the 50 "Everything" began to appear, I
specialize in Victorian GB - with sides in Australia and Egypt

Yes : I am aware of the existence of the Brusden-White, this "bible" for
Australia stamps.

For the time beeing, I juste used the *very* basic Yvert & Tellier
(for this country) ; for instance, they do not even mention the ~ 20
stamps printed (in the 1960's) on "Helecon" (phosphorescent) paper !

In a second step, I will use a better catalogue (the "Comprehensive
Catalogue of Australia Stamps") that I already have in old issues.
Apparently it is no more published (not a big problem for me as
I am not very interested in modern stamps from OZ).

After that 2d step, I will surely invest in a set of Brusden-Whites
or in one or 2 volumes to begin.

Which volumes would you suggest to acquire first ?

I have hundreds of old GB stamps : it will be my next country to sort
out ... in 10 years ? When I have finished to classify my KGV's
from OZ :-)

I collect 4 countries namely Romania, Greece, Vatican and San Marino.
I want to complete a collection with all the S/S from each country and
secondly to put together collections with normal stamps from those four
countries but only what pleases my eyes, that is mainly paintings on stamps,
athletic events, war time stamps and similar.

Thank you : I was not aware of that !
May be "COURTIADES" would "sound" more greek than COURTIADE ?

Does that family name have any meaning in greek language (my learning of
ancient greek at school during 4 years is quite far away - more than 50
years ago !)

BTW, my family name comes from the SW of France (between Bordeaux and

Yes, but in French greek names usually "lose" their "s" termination, like
Platini (accent on last i in French) which is originaly Italian and the
accent was in the first i...

Nope but it's a rather rare (and beautiful) name even in Greece.
It reminds of a person related to education, a school teacher or something
like that, don't ask me how I have this "image" in my mind;-)
Some people say/believe that some family names have a "relation" with the
profession people do and your name is one of them IMO...

Who knows where your ancestor came many generations ago...
They could have moved in SW France from say, Marseille area where the greek
element was quite large many centuries ago...

Actually your family name seems to be strongly related to anotherb greek
family name (quite common this one...), that of Courtidis (Courtides in
French, Kourtidis in greek)).
While searching for the origins of your name you should may consider the
posibility that your name was writen initially with a k instead of c, namely
Kourtiades (which is closely related to that of Kourtidis as I said).

I collect US, Australia, Portugal, and Great Britain -- the latter three
after visits to those countries. I bought packets in each country and
brought them home. I picked up the Australian stamps in a Melbourne
department store in 1985. They still had a stamp counter. Such counters
disappeared in the US back in the 50's or 60's. I picked up the British
stamps at Stanley Gibbons main store on the Strand in London. I got the
Portuguese stamps from a dealer in Lisbon in a fifth-floor walkup (no
elevator) office.

I also try to keep up with computer related stamps.

After being away from my books for years I'm back to US used ,used
blocks of 4, EFO'S ,tax & war savings ,ration ,christmas seals. I even
have a box of envelops from my cable company with dead letter office
stamped marks , people putting the wrong denotation stamps on the
envelope. The best is some one using The Mr. Zip logo from a sheet of
stamps. And some envelops cancelled with no stamps.

I have an inactive US collection started about age 10 thanks to an album given
to me by an uncle. I collected mint through 1978 when I got ticked off due to
the massive flood of stamps being issued each year. After adding about all the
material to this collection I can afford, I quit collecting for many years.

My wife is a collector though, and I saw an ad in her Linns for the Precancel
Stamp Society a dozen years ago or so, swapped a couple of emails with a dealer,
and before I knew it I was a precancel collector.

I have a bureau collection that is about as complete as it ever will be, Over
this past winter my wife printed out the free PSS album pages for Town and Type
(one example of each type of precancel used in a town) collections for all
states and territories, and I have begun migrating stamps from my hand made
albums to the new ones. The pages are issued by state and territory. All the
US is about 2800 pages.

I have general collections (like a T&T except you try to get a copy of each
precancel type on every face different stamp) for MS, OH, TX and eventually one
for TN. General collections are for the masochistic precancel collector. For
example, a complete Ohio T&T collection is about 1857 types. A complete Ohio
general collection is probably on the order of 30,000-40,000 stamps.

I also collect prepers (precanceled perfins), accumulate plain perfins thinking
that someday I'll buy an album and mount them, and have an accumulation of
precancels that show nail and screw heads used to repair the precancel devices.
Not sure where these are going to end up, but I keep accumulating them.

I collect covers commemorating US Bicentennial events that were issued by the
local historical society, historical site or stamp clubs back in the 70's and
80's. These do not have to be precanceled to interest me. 8^) I do not
collect any commercial or FDC versions of these events.

For several reasons I've been mostly inactive for the last 18 months outside of
buying some accumulations of precancels. Six more months and I hope things will
have straightened out enough to allow me to be an active collector again.

Sorry for the length, but there are few precancel collectors, and thought I
should explain some of the terms.

Good to hear about your precancel efforts. I've created some blank album
pages for precancels. It's very easy to do as almost all the stamps are
the same size. But I'm nowhere near 2800 pages...

Glad to meet another precancel collector.

I made several albums for T&T one year for the states I was most interested in,
and agree it can be done, and has been done by many collectors over the years.
I spent way too many hours typing in all the info once a page design was set.
The PSS pages saved me making over 40 albums and updating the rest, and the page
layout is much nicer than the layout I used. My wife printed the pages on 80 lb
acid free card stock and they came out very nice. Check out the album for your
favorite state:

http://www.precancels.com/free-albums/

I still use several different specialty pages I made for my general collections.
Those are posted in the files section of the precancel email list on Yahoo,
along with a couple other folks contributions. You have to join the group to
get access to the files. There is a link to the discussion group on the PSS
site.

Anybody feel free to post here if you ever find a source for decent peelable
hinges like the old Dennisons. Please, please, please!

Hello!

I collect for more then 60 years, I'd began at 7. and I am over 70.
now!! I had never stopped to collect, I am member from CCCC (see here
http://www.covercollectors.org/, it's an APS member) since 1957 to find
friends in foreign countries I collect, bit now for some countries I
don't find friends, it's a pity..

I collect so:

France used only from "before stamp", one letter with each type of
cancelation, to now , older also on letter and different cancelations
on stamp alone or letter; I collect a lot of French things, always
used, and have still more duplicates from beginning to now necessary to
exchange with foreign friends.

Swizerland used from "Strubeli" to now , I use Zumstein; I search a
friend in this country to get modern used stamps;

USA used from beginning to 1990, include precancels, I am APS member
(mainly to get a newspaper I have interest and to have to read
english); search mainly stamps before 1940 (straight edges) and
precancel (but now time to discover all stamps I bought on Ebay 2 years
ago); I search also a friend in the States, it seems difficult to find
one that still collect French stamps; I use Scott specialized

All Scandinavian countries used, with Facit or Michel and search a
friend in Finnland and Iceland (I had never one in this country).

All countries from older Yugoslavia (before and after) mint or used,
how I find the stamps, but this collection is sleeping because not easy
to find friends in those countries now, they have other things to do
then collecting stamps

I have now stopped to collect Argentinia and Israël mint because no
time and they are mint collection, used stamps are better for me!!

I think I have not miss out something!

Best wishes for this week!

Good to see you here and good to hear that you collect. Scandinavia. I
am Danish but live in Sweden. I used to live in Chatou close to Paris.
I was inspired to collect "Chatou", a collection that I call: My
village west of Paris; Chatou". You helpted me clarifying certain
cancellations for which I am very grateful.

If you need help with your collection of Denmark do not hesitate to
contacting me. I am a collector since I was 6 and being 59 today you
can figure out the number of years I spent collecting stamps.

Have a nice evening

Swizerland used from "Strubeli" to now , I use Zumstein; I search a friend
in this country to get modern used stamps;
USA used from beginning to 1990, include precancels, I am APS member
(mainly to get a newspaper I have interest and to have to read english);
search mainly stamps before 1940 (straight edges) and precancel (but now
time to discover all stamps I bought on Ebay 2 years ago); I search also a
friend in the States, it seems difficult to find one that still collect
French stamps; I use Scott specialized
All Scandinavian countries used, with Facit or Michel and search a friend
in Finnland and Iceland (I had never one in this country).
All countries from older Yugoslavia (before and after) mint or used, how I
find the stamps, but this collection is sleeping because not easy to find
friends in those countries now, they have other things to do then
collecting stamps
I have now stopped to collect Argentinia and Israël mint because no time
and they are mint collection, used stamps are better for me!!
I think I have not miss out something!
Best wishes for this week!
Bonjour
Good to see you here and good to hear that you collect. Scandinavia. I am
Danish but live in Sweden. I used to live in Chatou close to Paris. I was
inspired to collect "Chatou", a collection that I call: My village west of
Paris; Chatou". You helpted me clarifying certain cancellations for which I
am very grateful.
If you need help with your collection of Denmark do not hesitate to
contacting me. I am a collector since I was 6 and being 59 today you can
figure out the number of years I spent collecting stamps.
Have a nice evening
Svend
Bonjour,

Pierre wrote me some days ago that you sent me a message here!! Ilook
over RSCD each morning whan I am at hone, but I don't read all therads,
only those I had a interess ...

Yes I continue to collect Scandinavian countries, but is is not very
easy to find new issues used, and friends that alos continue to collect
French used stamps! I search a friend in Finland for 6 years now, and
for other countries I have friends but they write every 6 to 8 month
and it is so not easy to get stamps!!

Fot older stamps, no problem, I find it by some friends, on Delcampe
and at most stamp markets day around LYON!!

I have Facit 2013 and a national catalog for each country I collect;
for DK I have an AFA 2008, but not the special catalog, I think it is
in Danish language with no English (or German) traslation, and I have
difficulty to understand your language.

So I thank you for your offer but to day I don't need help to day!

But if you meet friends that search to find a friend in France to swap
stamps (used or mint, but I search only used) you can give my E-Mail!!

Best wishes

JP

In the past we run several times postings with the subject: What do you
collect? This way we could learn more about the philatelic interests of
the participants in RCSD and know better one another.

How about you? TIA.
Many thanks to all who participated in this RCSD survey.

We have many philatelic interests and we're still standing!

TIA.

I collect Italy and Area primarily (as listed in Sassone), with side
collections of Austria and (to a lesser extent) Hungary.

I am really just starting the latter, and a few days ago was delighted
to find a used copy of the '35 instead of 50 filler lake on blue' error
from the 1913 Turul bird set in a job lot that cost me about 15 GBP.

I still collect UK Machins and booklets.
