HI TO ALL,

Here is picture postcard sent by the second leutnant H.M. LUNDQUIST in September 1918 from France to Fergus Falls in Minnesota USA.

The picture is the abbey church of the city where I'm living.

According some local sources (books and photographies) there was some US units in the city and around, mainly trucks units and pilots apprentices and an headquarter, around 6000 men.

Can you help me for :
- explain what signifies A.S.S.C. in the mention of return at top. assuming that AMER. E.F. is American Expedionary Forces
- explain and complete the date-stamp ARMY POST OFFICE MPES * ???
- the censor mark seems to be A.E.F. PASSED AS CENSOR with number 314 or 814

With all these elements is it possible to locate where was this unit in september 1918 ?

If you have no idea can you direct me to a source (society, web-site) where I can find something.

With anticipation,
Thank You very much.

Hi to all,
I have obtained (there is some days) the following reply from Mr Alfred KUGEL of the Military Postal History Society:

"" While there are clues from the location of the photograph and the possible number of the censor marking on the card, the primary answer to the location of the sender would be the APO number which is missing entirely. As a result, I do not believe that the available evidence would enable you to know for sure where the card originated.

The legible part of the postmark reads "U.S. ARMY POST OFFICE MPES," with the latter letters being an abbreviation for Military Postal Express Service. This is postmark type A3001 in the AEF Handbook, which was widely used in France during 1918. However, without the number, who knows where this particular marking originated. Being sent by an officer, the card is self-censored. A possible alternative suggestion for A.S.S.C. would be Army Supply Service Corps.

Sorry that I can't be more definitive. ""

My best wishes for all for this end of year and for the next one.

Kind regards
DaDo
